I had scoped out a couple of places to attempt to take photos of the solar eclipse around the beautiful Southern California beaches (great vantage points). Unfortunately, the marine layer decided that my spots in Laguna Beach and Newport Beach became a massive grey “ehhh”. So I fell back to the absolute last resort… highest publicly accessible position without fog/marine layer. I ended up atop a multi-story parking garage in Irvine just in time to “see” a quarter of the sun blocked off (I say “see” since I only saw through the camera’s LCD).
Here’s what it looked like under normal imaging settings and no filters….
Here’s what I ended up with by putting basically 15 stops of light using 2 filters on my telephoto (long) lens…
